What does a falling cost per unit prove?
Usually scale and nothing more. Unit costs should fall as volume rises simply because fixed costs spread further, so the drop only means something when volume is flat.
What if cost stays flat while volume climbs?
Something structural is capping you — a labor model that scales one-for-one with orders, or a facility at its practical limit. Both need a decision rather than a tuning pass.
Should I divide by units or by orders?
Units for warehouse efficiency, orders for the cost of serving a customer. A multi-unit order costs barely more to pick than a single, so the two tell different stories.
How does this differ from cost per sales dollar?
Cost per unit isolates execution, because it holds still when prices move. Cost per sales dollar reacts to price and mix, so it shows what distribution is costing the P&L.
