Storage utilization rate

65.3%

of warehouse cube in use

Worked example

62,000 cubic feet of inventory in a 95,000 cubic foot building is 65.3% utilization. Run the same inventory against floor area instead of cube and a well-racked building scores far lower, so say which denominator you used whenever you quote the number.

When you reach for this

The number to bring to a conversation about leasing more space. Poor slotting frequently looks like a capacity problem right up until someone measures it.

How to read the number

Very high utilization is not the goal. Pick paths, staging, and receiving all need room, and a warehouse running near full typically loses more in throughput than it saves in rent.

Questions operators ask about this metric

Is higher utilization always better?

No. Once aisles and staging stop being clear, every added pallet position lengthens the pick path, and the labor that buys back costs more than the rent it avoided.

Should I measure cube or floor space?

Cube, whenever you rack vertically. Floor-space utilization ignores the height you are already paying for and makes a poorly racked building look full.

What counts as total warehouse cube?

Usable storage cube rather than the building envelope. Excluding docks, offices, and aisles gives you a number you can act on; including them tells you about the roof.

What does rising utilization with flat inventory mean?

Slotting has drifted. The same units are consuming more space because fast movers migrated to deep locations or because case packs changed underneath you.

Stop calculating this by hand

Every number on this page comes out of data you already have — orders, shipments, inventory, deductions. Endless keeps those in one source of truth instead of four exports, so the metric updates on its own and agents watch it for you.
