Dimensional Weight

A billable weight calculated from a package’s size, used when it exceeds actual weight.

Also known as: DIM weight, dim weight, volumetric weight

What is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight, or DIM weight, is a billable weight calculated from a package’s length, width, and height divided by a carrier’s divisor; 139 is a common divisor for parcel carriers in the United States. Carriers bill the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight, so a light item in an oversized box is charged as if it were heavy. Right-sizing cartons is often the fastest way to lower parcel cost per order.

How Endless handles it

Endless keeps product dimensions and weights in the catalog, so oversized packaging can be spotted against what the product needs.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate dimensional weight?

Multiply length by width by height in inches, then divide by the carrier’s divisor. A 20 × 16 × 12 inch box is 3,840 cubic inches; divided by 139 that is a billable weight of about 28 pounds, whatever the box actually weighs.
