Freight Class (NMFC)

The rating category that sets how LTL carriers price a commodity.

Also known as: NMFC, National Motor Freight Classification

What is Freight Class (NMFC)?

Freight class is the category, from class 50 to class 500, that LTL carriers use to price a commodity, published in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). Lower classes cover dense, durable freight that is cheap to move, and higher classes cover light, bulky, or fragile freight. The NMFC has moved many items to density-based classes, so accurate dimensions and weights on the bill of lading matter more than the item description. A carrier that inspects the freight and finds a different class reclassifies it and bills the difference.

How Endless handles it

Endless keeps product dimensions and weights in the catalog, so the numbers on a bill of lading can come from the product record.
