EDI Transaction Set

A standardized EDI document type identified by a number, like an 850 or 856.

Also known as: transaction set, EDI document type

What is EDI Transaction Set?

An EDI transaction set is a single standardized business document within the X12 standard, identified by a three-digit number such as 850 (purchase order) or 856 (advance ship notice). Each transaction set specifies exactly which segments and data elements it contains and in what order. A retail EDI program is essentially a required set of these documents the two partners agree to exchange.
