Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL)
A provider that manages a brand’s whole logistics network, including its 3PLs.
Also known as: 4PL, lead logistics provider
What is Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL)?
A Fourth-Party Logistics provider (4PL) manages a brand’s entire supply chain rather than a single warehouse, coordinating multiple 3PLs, carriers, and freight forwarders on the brand’s behalf. Where a 3PL executes fulfillment, a 4PL orchestrates the providers doing it and owns the performance of the network as a whole. The tradeoff is reach and coordination in exchange for another layer between the brand and its inventory.
How Endless handles it
Brands running Endless keep the orchestration themselves: one inventory and order model routes across every 3PL and location, so network-level control doesn’t require handing the network to an intermediary.
Frequently asked
What is the difference between a 3PL and a 4PL?
A 3PL executes fulfillment — it warehouses, picks, packs, and ships. A 4PL manages the providers, coordinating multiple 3PLs, carriers, and freight partners as one network. A brand can use several 3PLs directly, or hire a 4PL to manage them.
When does a 4PL make sense?
Usually when a network has grown past what the brand wants to coordinate internally — several 3PLs across regions, international freight, and no in-house logistics team. The cost is visibility: the further the brand sits from its own inventory data, the harder planning becomes.
