EDI

Value-Added Network (VAN)

A private network that routes EDI documents securely between trading partners.

Also known as: VAN

What is Value-Added Network (VAN)?

A Value-Added Network (VAN) is a third-party service that acts as a secure electronic post office for EDI, receiving documents from one partner and routing them to another’s mailbox. VANs handle transmission, tracking, and sometimes basic validation, and many retailers still require them alongside or instead of direct AS2 connections. VAN fees are typically charged per document or per character, so high volume has a real cost.

How Endless handles it

Endless connects through VANs or direct AS2 as each partner requires, abstracting the transport layer so operators think about orders and shipments, not mailboxes.
