QR Code barcode

The camera-readable matrix code on packaging, and the carrier GS1 chose for 2D at point of sale.

Also known as: Quick Response code, GS1 QR Code, GS1 Digital Link QR, ISO/IEC 18004

What is QR Code?

A QR Code is a two-dimensional matrix symbology that holds up to several thousand characters with built-in error correction and is readable by any phone camera. On packaging it has been a marketing link for a decade; under GS1 Sunrise 2027 it becomes a point-of-sale symbol too, carrying the GTIN in a GS1 Digital Link web address so one code serves the register, the shopper, and the recall notice. Laser scanners cannot read it; imagers can.

Encodes: Numeric, alphanumeric, byte, or kanji data. For retail, a GS1 Digital Link URI or GS1 element strings opened with FNC1.

A QR Code carrying a plain URL at error-correction level M. Retail versions carry a GS1 Digital Link URI that encodes the GTIN.

How QR Code is structured

A QR Code has no fixed data layout; the structure is in the symbol, not the content. For retail the content itself follows a GS1 pattern so a register can find the GTIN.

Part Length What it means
Finder and alignment patterns Fixed Three corner squares and smaller alignment marks let an imager locate and de-skew the symbol from any angle.
Format and version information Fixed Encodes the error-correction level, mask, and size so the reader knows how to decode.
Data and error correction codewords Variable Your payload interleaved with Reed-Solomon codewords.
GS1 Digital Link URI Payload https://your.domain/01/00614141000418/10/LOT2261/17/271130: the GTIN and optional attributes as a resolvable web address.

Where it is used

  • GS1 Digital Link QR on packaging for 2D at point of sale (Sunrise 2027)
  • Consumer engagement: product information, registration, authenticity, and re-order
  • Serialized units where each pack carries a unique code for traceability
  • Tickets, payments, and access where a phone camera is the reader
  • Internal labels where a small footprint or damage tolerance matters and every scanner is an imager
Packaging artwork

Static codes are artwork; serialized codes are printed per unit

A QR Code carrying a GTIN and a fixed URL is packaging artwork, generated once and placed as vector art with a quiet zone. The moment the code carries a serial number, a lot, or an expiry, it is generated per unit by the line printer or the labeling system from the batch record, and the same data must appear in the ASN and the traceability record. Own the domain in the URL; the code outlives the campaign.

Retailers whose routing guides call for it

Each retailer page covers the transaction sets, labeling rules, and reported chargebacks behind the requirement.

Mistakes that cost money

Error correction set too low

Level L saves space and dies at the first scuff. Use M or Q on packaging; H when a logo overlays the symbol.

Modules too small for the register

A phone reads a tiny QR from ten centimetres. A POS imager on a moving belt does not. Hold to GS1’s X-dimension for retail.

A URL on a domain you do not control

Free shorteners and agency domains expire. A GS1 Digital Link on a brand domain keeps working and can be redirected later.

Artwork inside the quiet zone or over a finder pattern

Logos and colors are fine in the middle with high error correction; the three corner squares and the four-module margin are not negotiable.

Low contrast or inverted printing

Dark modules on a light background. Some imagers read inverted codes; retail ones are not configured for it.

Assuming the register can read it

Laser scanners cannot. Until the retailer has completed its imager rollout, keep the linear barcode on the pack as well.

How Endless handles QR Code

Endless holds the GTIN, lot, expiry, and serial on the product and batch records that a GS1 Digital Link QR points to, so the code on the pack, the ASN, and the recall query resolve to the same data. Agents flag packaging that carries a QR without the linear barcode a retailer still requires.

Frequently asked questions

What is GS1 Sunrise 2027?

GS1’s target for retailers to be able to scan 2D barcodes, QR and Data Matrix, at point of sale by the end of 2027. Linear UPC and EAN remain valid; brands will dual-mark during the transition, and the 2D code carries the GTIN plus lot, expiry, or serial data the linear barcode cannot.

What is a GS1 Digital Link?

A way of writing GS1 identifiers as a web address, such as https://brand.example/01/00614141000418. Encoded in a QR Code, it lets a register extract the GTIN and a phone open a web page from the same symbol.

QR Code or Data Matrix for packaging?

QR for anything a shopper might scan, since phone cameras read it natively. Data Matrix for very small marks, healthcare, and industrial parts where footprint and direct marking matter. Both are acceptable GS1 2D carriers at POS.

Can a retail register scan a QR Code today?

Only if the lane has an imaging scanner and the retailer has enabled 2D decoding. Adoption is well under way but uneven, which is why the linear barcode stays on the pack through the transition.
