Detention and Per Diem

Charges for holding a carrier’s equipment or driver beyond the agreed free time.

Also known as: per diem, detention charges, detention fees, driver detention, container detention

What is Detention and Per Diem?

Detention is a charge for keeping a carrier’s equipment or driver longer than the agreed free time. In ocean freight it applies once a container has left the terminal and is not returned empty within its free days, and when the trucker or chassis provider bills it per day it is often called per diem. In trucking, detention is the hourly charge a carrier bills when a driver waits at a pickup or delivery beyond the free window, commonly two hours. Both kinds arrive later as line items on the freight bill.

How Endless handles it

Endless records shipment dates and freight costs against the PO, so detention charges land in landed cost for the products that caused them.
