What is Distributed Order Management (DOM)?
Distributed order management (DOM) is the software that decides where each order is fulfilled from when a brand has more than one location able to fill it, and splits orders across locations when no single one can. It makes four decisions per order: where to source, whether to split, when to release, and how to recover when the chosen location falls short. DOM consumes inventory truth rather than producing it, so its output is only as accurate as the availability figure it reads.

When does a brand need distributed order management?
Around the third fulfillment node, or as soon as ship-from-store or a mix of owned and 3PL locations enters the picture. With one location routing decides nothing; with two, simple rules usually suffice. Past that, the combinatorics exceed what an operator can reason about per order.
Why do DOM implementations underperform?
Usually because the availability data feeding the engine is stale or incomplete rather than because the rules are wrong. Routing logic pointed at an inventory picture that double-counts units already promised to wholesale will make fast, confident, wrong decisions.
