EDI 214: Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message
The carrier’s status update on where a shipment is and what just happened to it.
Carrier → Shipper / Consignee / Broker
At each milestone between pickup and delivery, and when a delay or exception occurs.
What is the EDI 214?
The EDI 214 reports shipment status from the carrier. Each message carries the carrier’s PRO or tracking number, the shipper’s references, and one or more status events, each with a status code, a reason code, a date, a time, and a location. Status codes such as X3 (arrived at pickup), AF (departed pickup), X1 (arrived at delivery), and D1 (completed unloading) give the shipper a timeline it can test against appointment windows. Late, missing, or out-of-order 214s are the usual reason a shipper learns about a missed delivery from the customer instead of the carrier.
How EndlessEDI handles the 214
EndlessEDI receives 214s and posts each status event to the shipment it belongs to, so late freight is flagged while there is still time to act.
