EDI 404: Rail Carrier Shipment Information
The shipper’s bill of lading and instructions for a rail shipment.
Shipper → Rail carrier
When a shipper releases a loaded car or container to a railroad.
What is the EDI 404?
The EDI 404 gives a railroad the shipping instructions for a carload or intermodal shipment: the car or container number, origin and destination, route, commodity, weight, and the parties to bill. The railroad uses it to create the waybill that moves with the shipment. It is the rail counterpart of the motor carrier 211.
How EndlessEDI handles the 404
EndlessEDI sends 404s built from the shipment record in Endless, so the railroad’s waybill carries the same references as the order.
