Model Context Protocol (MCP)
An open standard that connects an AI assistant to live business data and actions.
Also known as: MCP, MCP server
What is Model Context Protocol (MCP)?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting an AI assistant to live data and tools, so it can read current records and take defined actions rather than work from a pasted export. A vendor implements it as an MCP server that exposes a set of reads and writes; the operator authorizes the connection once and then asks questions in plain language. Two things determine what an MCP server is worth to an operator: how much of the business it can see, and how precisely its access can be scoped.
How Endless handles it
Endless MCP exposes orders, fulfillments, shipments, and their full history across every channel a brand sells on. Reads are on from the start, and write access is enabled per brand on request, inheriting the roles the person already has.
Frequently asked questions
Is MCP the same as an API?
No. An API is the interface a developer writes code against. MCP is a layer above it that lets an AI assistant discover and call those capabilities in plain language, so an operator gets the same reach without writing code.
Does an MCP server let AI change my data?
Only what the server exposes and the operator’s permissions allow. Read access and write access are separate decisions, and a well-scoped implementation inherits the roles a person already has rather than granting new ones.
Why does coverage matter more than the protocol?
Every MCP server speaks the same protocol, so the difference between them is what sits behind it. A server built around a single storefront answers with that storefront’s data, which omits wholesale, retail, and EDI commitments — and an incomplete availability picture is how brands oversell.
