EDI Requirements

Walgreens EDI Requirements

Walgreens trades EDI on ANSI X12 and manages suppliers through the SupplierNet portal, with item data synced via GDSN (1WorldSync). It enforces a three-way match (invoice ↔ PO ↔ ASN) and has specific ASN timing for both DC and direct-store-delivery (DSD) shipments.

Required EDI documents

Document Name Notes
EDI 850 Purchase Order primary
EDI 856 Advance Ship Notice (ASN) primary; strict timing
EDI 810 Invoice primary; three-way match
EDI 820 Remittance additional
EDI 860 PO Change additional
EDI 870 Order Status additional
EDI 861 Receiving Advice additional
EDI 997 Functional Acknowledgment primary

Labeling & packaging

  • GS1-128 / UCC-128 labels on all cartons and pallets; barcode data must match the ASN.
  • Three-way match required: the 810 must reconcile to the 850 and the 856.

Connection & portal

  • ANSI X12 with VAN, AS2, or FTP. Vendor portal: SupplierNet (suppliernet.walgreens.com) holds policies, procedures, and supplier performance metrics.
  • Item data syncs via GDSN (1WorldSync); smaller suppliers may use a third-party web-EDI portal.

Onboarding & testing

Onboarding via SupplierNet is reported at ~2–6 weeks, with EDI testing plus GDSN data sync reported at ~2–4 weeks minimum. A mandatory test cycle applies.

Compliance & chargebacks

  • Reported deductions/chargebacks driven by ASN timing, three-way-match failures, and bad barcodes; specific Walgreens dollar/percentage figures aren’t published publicly.
  • Reported ASN timing: at least 4 hours before delivery to a DC, and at least 1 hour before arrival for direct-store-delivery (DSD) — verify against the routing guide.

Worth knowing

  • Walgreens publishes DSD-specific 850/856/810 guides (X12 v4010).
  • GDSN (1WorldSync) item-data sync is part of the setup.

Walgreens EDI FAQ

What EDI documents does Walgreens require?

The primary set is the 850, 856, 810, and 997, with the 820, 860, 870, and 861 also used. Walgreens enforces a three-way match between the invoice, PO, and ASN.

What is Walgreens’ ASN timing rule?

Reported timing is at least 4 hours before delivery to a DC and at least 1 hour before arrival for direct-store-delivery (DSD). Confirm current rules in SupplierNet and the routing guide.

EDI requirements and penalty schedules change and vary by program. Figures marked “reported” come from third-party sources, not the retailer’s published fee schedule — always confirm against the retailer’s current routing guide and your vendor agreement.
