EDI Requirements

Burlington EDI Requirements

Burlington Stores is an off-price retailer (apparel, home, baby), so buys are opportunistic and packaging/ticketing discipline matters as much as the EDI itself. First-party vendors run traditional EDI on ANSI X12 v4010; smaller vendors can use Burlington’s free web-based Gateway portal instead of a full EDI stack. The 856/ASN and GS1-128 carton labeling are the most compliance-sensitive pieces, and merchandise is expected to arrive floor-ready with FineLine price tickets already attached.

Required EDI documents

Document Name Notes
EDI 850 Purchase Order
EDI 855 PO Acknowledgment reported / by program
EDI 856 Advance Ship Notice (ASN) most compliance-sensitive; ≥24 hours before delivery appointment
EDI 810 Invoice must reconcile to PO and ASN
EDI 860 PO Change conditional / by vendor system
EDI 852 Product Activity Data conditional
EDI 824 Application Advice returns ASN/invoice rejections and accept-with-errors
EDI 997 Functional Acknowledgment

Labeling & packaging

  • 4“x6” GS1-128 (UCC-128) carton/shipping label on every carton to DCs and stores; the SSCC-18/carton ID (LPN) must match the 856 exactly and is reported as not reusable for roughly one to two years.
  • Label carries style, color, size, and quantity, plus PO number and a “mark for” destination store ZIP (supporting a 9-digit US ZIP) in both human-readable and barcode form.
  • NRF standard color and size codes required for apparel. Burlington does not receive/scan at the pallet level, so palletized cartons must sit with labels facing outward or upward.

Connection & portal

  • AS2 or an approved VAN on ANSI X12 v4010; VANs/providers (SPS, Cleo, TrueCommerce) can broker connectivity.
  • Gateway is Burlington’s free web-based EDI portal — vendors can receive POs, build UCC-128 labels, create ASNs, and submit invoices without a full EDI system. Note that Gateway is reported not to allow re-transmission of a corrected ASN.

Onboarding & testing

Reported roughly 4–8 weeks to production cutover (partner-controlled). Certification testing is required before go-live. Typical sequence: vendor setup + Burlington vendor/ISA number → choose AS2/VAN or Gateway → mapping → certification per transaction set → production. Ticketing is provisioned in parallel through FineLine.

Compliance & chargebacks

  • Deduction/chargeback exposure is reported as high, concentrated in ASN accuracy, GS1-128 label defects, and routing-guide non-compliance; specific dollar/percentage figures sit behind the vendor portal and are not published — treat any figure as reported and confirm against Burlington’s current routing guide and vendor manual.
  • Routing must be submitted at least three business days before the Vendor Ready to Ship date; the 856 must transmit at least 24 hours before the scheduled delivery appointment (excluding weekends), and each ASN must cover a single vendor number.
  • Mandatory pre-ticketing: FineLine Technologies is Burlington’s ticketing provider, and merchandise must arrive with tickets attached — missing/incorrect tickets are reported as a chargeback.

Worth knowing

  • Off-price model: buys are opportunistic and floor-ready packaging matters — pre-ticketed via FineLine (order at finelineglobal.com/FastTrak using your Burlington vendor + ISA number), tickets no smaller than 3“x4” apart from the 4“x6” UCC-128 label.
  • Burlington leans on the 824 Application Advice to bounce back ASN/invoice errors immediately — vendors are expected to catch the 824/997, fix, and resend.
  • The Gateway portal lowers the barrier for smaller vendors, but because it won’t resend a corrected ASN, the first submission has to be accurate.

How EndlessEDI helps with Burlington

Burlington’s Gateway won’t resend a corrected ASN, so accuracy on the first send matters. EndlessEDI builds the 856 against the SSCC/LPN on each label, tracks FineLine ticketing per PO, and reconciles PO, ASN, and invoice so the 824 returns no errors.

Burlington EDI FAQ

What EDI documents does Burlington require?

Core documents are the 850 (PO), 856 (ASN), 810 (invoice), and 997, with the 824 Application Advice returning errors and the 860 conditional by vendor system, on ANSI X12 v4010. A 855 acknowledgment applies by program — confirm your setup.

Do I need full EDI software to sell to Burlington?

Not necessarily. Burlington offers Gateway, a free web-based portal where you can receive POs, generate UCC-128 labels, build ASNs, and submit invoices. Larger vendors typically run traditional EDI over AS2 or a VAN instead. Note Gateway is reported not to allow re-transmitting a corrected ASN, so accuracy on the first pass matters.

Does Burlington require pre-ticketing?

Yes. Burlington is off-price and expects floor-ready goods with price tickets attached before shipment. FineLine Technologies is the ticketing provider; missing or incorrect tickets are reported to trigger chargebacks. Confirm current ticket specs and fees in Burlington’s vendor manual.

EDI requirements and penalty schedules change and vary by program. Figures marked “reported” come from third-party sources, not the retailer’s published fee schedule — always confirm against the retailer’s current routing guide and your vendor agreement.
